In Shanghai you usually do not give tips.

Waiters at restaurants and bars as well as Taxi drivers do not expect any tip. Some fancy restaurants might levy a service charge or will give you some wet towel that will later be charged 1 or 2 rmb per person.

Porters at high-end hotels can expect a few rmb per bag if they carry them for you.

There are several options available in Shanghai to buy your groceries online. The most popular ones that provide some imported and organic products are:

Unfortunately TAP WATER in Shanghai is NOT SAFE to drink. You can brush your teeth, do laundry or the dishes with it but it is recommended not to drink it.

Note that Chinese people do not drink tap water either and so the water served in restaurants is always boiled and safe to drink.

For cooking at home, you can either boil the tap water, get a water fountain or install a water purifier system under your kitchen’s sink.

In Shanghai, the voltage is 220 volts / 50 Hz AC.

Unlike Facebook groups, Wechat groups are more difficult to find. You will need to be invited by a member of a group to be able to join it. Also, unlike Facebook groups, Wechat groups are limited to 500 members.

The best way to find Wechat groups is to ask around – for example on Facebook expat groups – what kind of groups you are looking for and if somebody can invite you in.

As the members are limited on Wechat, the groups are usually very specific to one topic or one location. For example “people looking for an Ayi”, “Basketball players near Jing’An”, “Dog lovers in FFC”, “Buy/Sell for used kids stuff”…

Yes. Unfortunately in Shanghai Craigslist is not very popular but there are a few facebook groups where you can buy/sell used items. There are Wechat groups too but you will need to be introduced by a member to join them.

Here are a few Facebook groups:
> “Used Stuff For Sale in Shanghai” group
> “Shanghai Expat – Buying/Selling” group

Yes there are several but the most active ones are:

> Shanghai Expats
> Expats in Shanghai
